  • An amount can be split up according to a ratio
  • Each side of the ratio represents the number of parts of the total that makes up that share
  • Add up the sides of the ratio to find the total number of parts
  • Example problem: Sam and Nick share 120 books in the ratio 1 to 5
  • Step 1: Find the total parts by adding up the sides of the ratio (1 + 5 = 6)
  • Step 2: Find the value of one part by dividing the total into equal parts (120 / 6 = 20)
  • Step 3: Multiply both sides of the ratio by the value of one part (1 * 20 = 20, 5 * 20 = 100)
  • Step 4: Identify whom each side of the ratio refers to (Sam gets 20 books, Nick gets 100 books)
