Standard Form Addition & Subtraction

3:09 Standard Form Calculations
Spec N9
  • Adding and subtracting numbers in standard form can only be done when the indices are the same
  • When adding numbers in standard form, add the coefficients
  • When subtracting numbers in standard form, subtract the coefficients
  • Rewrite the numbers to the same power of 10 before adding or subtracting
  • If the coefficient becomes greater than 10 when rewriting, the answer is not in standard form
  • Example: 3.5 times 10 to the 3 plus 4.2 times 10 to the 4 equals 4.55 times 10 to the 4
  • Example: 9 times 10 to the 5 minus 3.6 times 10 to the 4 equals 8.64 times 10 to the 5
