Standard Form Multiplication & Division
- Standard form makes it easier to multiply or divide large and small numbers together
- When multiplying in standard form, add the indices of the powers of 10 and multiply the coefficients
- If the coefficient is greater than 10, the answer is not in standard form and needs to be adjusted
- Division in standard form is similar, but subtract the indices and divide the coefficients
- Standard form is widely used in the sciences, especially in physics
- To convert a number to standard form, adjust the coefficient and power of 10 as needed
- Check the conversion by multiplying out the two versions of the answer
- Example: 5 times 10 to the 3 times 7 times 10 to the 6 = 35 times 10 to the 9, adjust to 3.5 times 10 to the 10
- Example: 2 times 10 to the 3 divided by 4 times 10 to the 4 = 0.5 times 10 to the -1, adjust to 5 times 10 to the -2
