  • Linear functions have graphs that are straight lines
  • The equation for a straight line is y = mx + c
  • The coefficient of x (m) represents the gradient of the line
  • The constant term (c) represents the y intercept of the line
  • The y intercept is the y value where the line cuts through the y axis
  • The gradient tells us how steep the line is
  • Gradients can be positive or negative
  • Straight line graphs can also be completely horizontal or vertical
  • A horizontal line has a gradient of zero and can be represented by the equation y = constant
  • A vertical line has an infinite gradient and can be represented by the equation x = constant
