  • The density of an object is given as density = mass volume or \(\rho=\dfrac{m}{v}\) where:
    • \(\rho\) is the density of an object in kg/m³
    • \(m\) is its mass in kg
    • \(V\) is its volume in m³
  • Density is a property of a material. We say steel is heavier than plastic because steel has a higher density.
  • Density is partially dependent on the atomic mass of the molecules making up a material.
  • Determining the density of irregularly shaped objects requires measuring their volume. This can be done by placing them in a measuring cylinder filled with water and measuring the change in volume.
