DIALOGUE EXAMPLES: The wider world

  • The conditional tense is equivalent to the English ‘would + verb’ construction (e.g. ‘I would cook dinner but I’m too tired’). In Spanish, it is used to express one of three scenarios:
    • What would happen under certain conditions (e.g. Comerías más si te gustara la comida. You would eat more if you liked the food.)
    • Polite requests (e.g. ¿Hablarías un poco más despacio, por favor? Would you speak a little more slowly, please?)
    • Hypotheticals (e.g. Hablaría con ella, pero no sé dónde está. I would talk to her, but I don’t know where she is.)

    • Yo tendría más tiempo si no trabajara tanto. (I would have more time if I didn’t work so much.)
    • ¿Tú tendrías paciencia en esa situación? (Would you have patience in that situation?)
    • Ella haría un pastel si tuviera los ingredientes. (She would make a cake if she had the ingredients.)
    • ¿Qué harías tú en mi lugar? (What would you do in my place?)
    • Yo podría ayudarte mañana. (I could help you tomorrow.)
    • Ellos podrían ganar si tuvieran más dinero. (They could win if they had more money.)
    • Él pondría el libro en la biblioteca. (He would put the book in the library.)
    • ¿Dónde pondrías tú la mesa? (Where would you put the table?)
    • Habría más gente si el clima fuera mejor. (There would be more people if the weather were better.)
    • No habría problema en cambiar la hora. (There would be no problem changing the time.)
