  • The preterite tense is used for the simple past tense (e.g. I saw, you drank, they left).
Regular preterite verb conjugation

  • Some verbs have irregular preterite forms that you just need to memorise. Ir and ser share the same forms, but the others are different.

  • Examples
    • Ir (to go) → Fuimos al museo ayer. (We went to the museum yesterday.)
    • Ser (to be) → La fiesta fue divertida. (The party was fun.)
    • Dar (to give) → Le di el dinero al camarero. (I gave the money to the waiter.)
    • Tener (to have) → Ayer tuve una reunión importante. (I had an important meeting yesterday.)
    • Estar (to be) → El sábado estuvimos en Madrid.  (On Saturday we were in Madrid.)
    • Poder (can) → No pude abrir la puerta. (I couldn’t open the door.)
    • Poner (to put) → Ella puso el libro sobre la mesa. (She put the book on the table.)
    • Saber (to find out) → Supimos la verdad ayer.  (We found out the truth yesterday.)
    • Hacer (to do / make) → ¿Qué hiciste anoche? (What did you do last night?)
    • Querer (to want / try) → Quise ayudarte, pero fue tarde. (I tried to help you, but it was late.)
    • Venir (to come) → Mis amigos vinieron a la fiesta. (My friends came to the party.)
    • Decir (to say / tell) → Te dije la verdad.  (I told you the truth.)
    • Traer (to bring) → ¿Tú trajiste el vino? (Did you bring the wine?)
    • Ver (to see) → Vi una película excelente. (I saw an excellent movie.)
