COMPUTER SYSTEMS: Network topologies

Mesh topology

  • A mesh topology is where devices connect to each other directly or indirectly without a central switch.
    • Full mesh: every device is connected to every other device directly.

    • Partial mesh: some devices are connected directly, others communicate indirectly.

Advantages Disadvantages
  • No single point of failure, making it very robust; if one device fails, data routes via other devices.
  • Good for wireless networks where devices can relay data and extend network range.
  • Wired mesh networks are expensive and complex, requiring many cables and interfaces.
  • Without a central control point, it’s hard to monitor and secure all data traffic efficiently.
