Properties of waves

Sound waves (HT ONLY)

  • Sound waves can travel through solids and liquids by causing vibrations in them.
  • We detect sound waves using our ears:
    • When sound waves enter the ear, they cause the eardrum to vibrate.
    • This causes small bones in the ear to vibrate.
    • These connect to nerves, which send a signal to the brain, which interprets the vibrations as sound.
    • This process will only work for sound waves with frequencies between 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz.
