Whilst not one of the most visible themes within the text, multiple characters go through a process of losing their innocence. It is intrinsically related to the moral growth of the younger characters, Sheila and Eric, as they are introduced to the harsh realities of their society, as well as to Eva Smith who loses her innocence at the hands of misogynistic men and the brutal consequences of capitalist individualism.
