Background Information

Race and culture

Europe, in the 16th century, was expanding, particular in regards to trade. Contact with new cultures was inevitable, and came to include the north African country of Mauretania (now Algeria). People from the area were referred to as ‘Moors’ by the Europeans. The use of “moor” throughout the play suggests that this is the culture Othello belongs to, though there is never any explicit identification of his ethnicity.
