Motivation refers to the desire and commitment employees have to perform their work well. A motivated workforce is crucial for achieving business goals and maintaining a competitive edge. Motivation helps:

  • Boosts productivity: motivated staff work more efficiently and take pride in their output.
  • Reduces absenteeism: people are less likely to call in sick when they enjoy their work.
  • Improves staff retention: happy, motivated workers stay with the company longer, reducing recruitment costs.
  • Enhances reputation: motivated teams often provide better customer service, strengthening brand loyalty.
  • Attracts skilled talent: a reputation for employee satisfaction draws strong candidates.
  Method of motivation Description Example
Financial methods Wages and salaries Regular pay incentivises consistent performance Retail workers on an hourly wage
Bonuses and commission Extra pay based on performance or sales targets A car salesperson receiving commission per vehicle sold
Fringe benefits Non-cash perks such as a company car or gym membership Tech firms offering staff free meals and wellness benefits
Promotions Advancing to a higher role with greater pay and responsibility An assistant manager being promoted to store manager
Non-financial methods Job enrichment Giving employees more responsibility or meaningful tasks A chef designing new menu items, not just preparing food
Autonomy Letting employees make decisions and manage their own work A graphic designer choosing how to approach a campaign
Job rotation Moving employees between different tasks or roles to prevent boredom A factory worker switching between picking and packing
Recognition Public praise, awards, or certificates for good performance. ‘Employee of the Month’ schemes or shout-outs in team meetings.
