Tips for answering in English

  • Read the text first then the question, then once more look at the text to find the answer. This makes it faster to find the relevant information.
  • Underline keywords in the question (wh- words like why, when, where) as well as any other essential words.
  • For example: in the question Why does Marta say she prefers living in the countryside rather than the city? you may want to highlight or underline the words shown.
  • Be concise but accurate in your English answers – don’t make up or assume information not found in the text
  • If being asked about whether an opinion is positive or negative look for negative or positive word qualifiers.
  • Here are some of the most common qualifiers:
    • Positive opinion qualifiers:
      • me gusta / me encanta / me chifla (I like / I love)
      • es genial / estupendo / fantástico / maravilloso (it’s great / fantastic / wonderful)
      • es útil / interesante / importante (it’s useful / interesting / important)
      • disfruto (de) (I enjoy)
      • prefiero / me fascina / me interesa (I prefer / I’m fascinated by / I’m interested in)
      • lo paso bien / me lo paso bomba (I have a good time / I have a blast)
    • Negative opinion qualifiers:
      • odio / detesto / no me gusta / me molesta (I hate / I can’t stand / I don’t like / it annoys me)
      • es aburrido / terrible / horrible (it’s boring / terrible / awful)
      • es una pérdida de tiempo (it’s a waste of time)
      • me fastidia / me irrita / me da asco (it annoys me / it irritates me / it disgusts me)
      • lo paso mal / me aburre (I have a bad time / it bores me)
