  • Esto and eso mean this and that in a general or undefined way. They are used when talking about ideas, situations, or unknown things.
  • They are neuter, which means they don’t refer to a specific masculine or feminine noun. For example: ¿Qué es esto? (What is this?), ¡Eso es increíble! (That is amazing!), ¿Por qué dijiste eso? (Why did you say that?)
  • Invariable pronouns refer to unspecified people or things and do not change for gender or number (e.g. algo = something, alguien = someone/ somebody). These pronouns don’t agree with verbs or adjectives by gender/number – they’re fixed. For example: ¿Oíste algo? (Did you hear something?), Alguien está en la puerta. (Someone is at the door.), ¿Has dicho algo? (Have you said something?)
