DIALOGUE EXAMPLES: The wider world

The names of languages in Spanish are masculine with ‘el,’ and without capital letters unless they are at the start of sentences. For example: el español (Spanish), el francés (French), el inglés (English), el alemán (German), etc.

  • Nationality adjectives must agree in gender and number (masc./fem., singular/plural). If it is used for a feminine noun: add -a.
  • If it is plural: add -es (or -as for feminine plural).
Singular Plural Gender
El ingles (englishman) Los ingleses (Englishmen) Masc.
La inglesa (englishwoman) Las inglesas (Englishwomen) Fem.
El español (the spaniard) Los españoles (Spaniards)

Masc.
La española (the Spanish woman) Las españolas (Spanish women) Fem.
