Arthur Birling is a self-aggrandising figure and the central point of the play from which we can extrapolate all key themes and messages. As the character with the most to say in the opening of the play, Mr Birling is our first and most stringent exposure to the ideologies of the world of this text, so we are encouraged to compare contrasting beliefs against what he has proclaimed.
