Fabian

Twelfth Night

Fabian is a very lowly servant of Olivia. His position has the lowest status in the play. Although there are other low-profile servants, such as Orsino’s Curio and Valentine, Fabian’s position in Olivia’s household is clearly lower than even Maria’s (although he does enjoy male privilege) as he does not wait on his master directly, indeed does not even speak with her until the very end of the play. Along with Feste, Fabian is also one of only two characters (excepting Orsino’s aforementioned servants and the Priest, who’s measly total of eight lines of pure exposition combined make them fairly insignificant) whose judgement is not confused by love. Thus, as an objective witness and enabler of the chaos reaped by Sir Toby and the gang, Fabian is to some extent a reflection of the audience.
