A hydrograph shows the relationship between precipitation (rainfall) and discharge (water flow in a river) over time. Hydrographs are useful for flood prediction by predicting the likelihood of flooding by analysing how quickly a river responds to rainfall, and for flood warnings to issue alerts and plan evacuations.
