Deformation
- A single force will only cause a stationary object to move. To deform (change the shape of) an object, multiple forces must be used:
- Two forces pulling in opposite directions can stretch an object.
- Two forces pushing in opposite directions can compress an object.
- Two forces pushing in one direction at the ends of an object and one pushing in its centre can bend it.
- Stretches can be elastic or inelastic:
- An object will return to its original length after an elastic deformation.
- An object will be permanently stretched after an inelastic deformation
