- An ultrasound wave is a sound wave at a frequency above the range of human hearing. It is directed as a beam and the waves are partially reflected when they meet a boundary between two different media, and travel back to a detector.
- A computer records the reflected waves’ intensities and the times it took for them to return. This information is used to produce an image or determine the depth.
- Ultrasound can be used for detection, such as with medical scans or sonar. It is especially useful for foetal scanning as it doesn't harm the patient or unborn baby.
