  • Calorie intake: high in HICs due to wealth and access to diverse diets; low in LICs due to poverty, limited food availability, and malnourishment.
  • Food supply: surplus in regions with advanced agriculture; deficit in regions with poor infrastructure, conflict, or harsh climates.
  • Reasons for increasing food consumption: economic development: rising incomes allow people to afford more food and a greater variety (e.g. meat, dairy, processed foods). Urbanisation also increases demand for variety.
  • Rising population: global population growth (expected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050) increases demand for food. Rapid growth in LICs and NEEs (Newly Emerging Economies) puts pressure on food supplies.
