  • Moments can be directed clockwise or anticlockwise about a pivot.
    • The resultant moment is the difference between the total clockwise and anticlockwise moment. An object will turn in the direction of the resultant moment.
    • If the resultant moment is zero (meaning the clockwise and anticlockwise moments are equal) then the object doesn’t turn and is in equilibrium. This is the principle of moments.
  • Cranes and other machinery that could topple use counterweights to balance the moment from their load.
