  • Sounds appear to have a higher or lower pitch depending on if the source is moving towards or away from us. This is because the sound waves are being compressed or stretched respectively, changing their wavelength and frequency.
  • A similar phenomenon occurs with light from extremely fast-moving sources.
    • Analysing the light from distant galaxies shows that its wavelength is longer than expected. This is called red-shift.
    • This suggests the galaxy is moving away from the Earth.
    • Furthermore, the further the galaxy is away, the greater the red-shift. This suggests the further away a galaxy is, the faster it is moving.
