  • A solenoid consists of a wire coiled into numerous loops.
    • The magnetic fields from each loop on the coil combine to form a field similar in shape to a bar magnet outside the coils and uniform inside them.
    • The strength of this field can be increased by increasing the current or using more loops on the coil.
  • An electromagnet is a solenoid with an iron core within the coil.
    • The iron core further increases the strength of the magnetic field.
    • Electromagnets are useful as their strong magnetic field can be switched on or off very quickly.
