  • As an object falls to a lower depth in a liquid, the pressure the liquid exerts on it increases. This is because there is a greater weight of liquid above the object.
  • The pressure an object experiences at the bottom of a column of water is given by \(\text{pressure}=\text{height of column}\times\text{density of liquid}\times\text{gravitational field strength}\) or \(p=h\rho g\) where:
    • \(p\) is the pressure in pascals, Pa
    • \(h\) is the height of the column in m
    • \(\rho\) is the density of the liquid in kg/m3
    • \(g\) is the gravitational field strength in N/kg
