  • In Spanish, the infinitive (the basic form of the verb, ending in -ar, -er, -ir) can act as a noun.
  • It is often equivalent to English ‘-ing’ words (e.g. correr running).
  • For example, the word comer is normally the infinitive of the verb eating but can be used as a noun in a sentence like: el comer es importante (eating is important).
  • Examples:
    • El leer es divertido (reading is fun)
    • Viajar es educativo (traveling is educational)
    • El estudiar requiere disciplina (studying requires discipline)
