Suffix patterns

  • In Spanish, just like in English, we can change words a bit to create new words. We do this by adding little parts to the end of a word – these are called suffixes. These patterns help us turn:
    • Adjectives into adverbs with -mente (like slow slowly)
      • If the adjective ends in -o, change it to -a first. Then just add – mente. For example:
      • rápido rápidamente (quickly)
      • lento lentamente (slowly)
      • normal normalmente (normally)
      • fácil fácilmente (easily)
      • alegre alegremente (happily)
    • Adjectives into nouns with -idad (like happy happiness)
      • Add -idad to an adjective to make it a noun. For example:
      • real realidad (reality)
      • curioso curiosidad (curiosity)
      • feliz felicidad (happiness)
      • seguro seguridad (safety/ security)
      • necesario necesidad (necessity)
    • Verbs into adjectives with -able (like believe believable)
      • Spanish does the same as English! Just add -able or -ible to the verb. For example:
      • evitar evitable (avoidable)
      • comprender comprensible (understandable)
      • creer creíble (believable)
      • acceder accesible (accessible)
