  • Exploration of environmentally sensitive areas: energy insecurity drives exploration in remote or sensitive areas (e.g. Arctic oil drilling, Amazon rainforest). This results in environmental damage (e.g. oil spills, deforestation) and comes with many risks to local communities and the global climate.
  • Economic and environmental costs: energy shortages increase prices, affecting industries and households. Over-reliance on fossil fuels leads to air pollution and climate change.
  • Food production: energy is required for irrigation, machinery, and transport in agriculture. Energy shortages can reduce food production, leading to higher prices and food insecurity.
  • Industrial output: industries reliant on energy (e.g. manufacturing, mining) may reduce output or shut down during shortages. This impacts economic growth and employment.
  • Potential for conflict: competition for energy resources can lead to disputes between countries or regions. Energy insecurity can exacerbate existing political tensions.
