  • Power is the rate at which energy is transferred or at which work is done.
  • Power is measured in Watts, W.
  • One Watt is the power that would transfer one Joule of energy in one second.
  • The power of a process can be calculated as energy transferred ÷ time or work done ÷ time.
  • This can be written as \(P=\dfrac{E}{t}\) or \(P=\dfrac{W}{t}\) where:
    • \(P\) is the power in W
    • \(E\) is the energy transferred in J
    • \(t\) is the time taken in s
  • If two processes transfer the same amount of energy, then the one that completes the process in less time has a greater power.
