  • The solar system consists of:
    • A star, orbited by planets, called the Sun, which releases energy to its surroundings.
    • Four planets close to the Sun made from rock: Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars.
    • Five planets further from the Sun made of gas: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
    • Dwarf planets further from the Sun, including Pluto.
    • Moons that orbit planets.
  • The Sun is part of a group of over 200,000 million stars in the Milky Way galaxy.
