Much of the struggle that forms part of the narrative of Romeo and Juliet is the characters’ struggles against the public and social institutions that explicitly or implicitly oppose the mere existence of their love. This is demonstrated through the play’s emphasis on family history and placement, the desire for public order, and the social importance placed on masculine honour. As such, there is a constant residing conflict between individual desires and social institutions throughout the play: the young lovers’ struggle against their respective families and the values that are inherently dear to each.
