  • 👥 Sandra Bem (1974) developed the Bem Sex Role Inventory which consisted of 20 items that represented typically male characteristics, 20 typically female characteristics, and 20 neutral characteristics. She used self-report studies where participants would rate their own personality and then measured them for androgyny and masculinity.
  • This is a self-report questionnaire so is subject to participants’ biases and results may lack accuracy (e.g. people may have different understandings of what characteristics like ‘leadership’ mean and thus rank themselves differently).
  • Self-esteem is a potential confounding variable as people with high self-esteem are more likely to rate themselves highly for stereotypically positive characteristics like ‘confidence’ and ‘kindness’).
