  • 👥 Mead (1935) conducted cross cultural research which can provide useful insight into cultural differences in gender roles. She found that within the same island of New Guinea there were many differences in gender roles and temperaments of different tribes, challenging the idea that gender is biological.
  • However there is also evidence of similarities between cultures concerning gender roles. 👥 Munroe and Munroe (1975) found that across cultures women and men had divided roles in the household; typically women wouldn’t go to work and the men would be the breadwinner in the majority of the families that they researched.
