  • There are two main therapies for schizophrenia: CBT and family therapy.
  • CBT: attempts to rewire the schizophrenia patients’ thinking. The therapist aims to understand their behaviour which helps them provide the best support and treatment for the specific patient. It can’t cure schizophrenia, but patients gain comfort in understanding the cause of their symptoms – especially positive symptoms such as delusions and hallucinations. It aims to increase self-awareness and understand that they are not ‘weird’ for having such thoughts.
  • Family therapy: the schizophrenia patient’s family attends regular therapy sessions. It aims to reduce the stress of living with someone who has schizophrenia. The family learns how to detect the beginning of a psychotic episode and how to support their family member through it. The stress on the patient weakens, and it becomes more about co-operation.
