Throughout literary history, fire and light has always been synonymous with
positive attributes: usually happiness, hope, and truth. By contrast, darkness and dimness have always been related to negative attributes: such as death, unhappiness, and misery. In A Christmas Carol, there are frequent references to both light and darkness, whether they be natural (e.g. derived from the weather) or artificial (e.g. derived from a lamp).
