  • Biomass is the mass of any living or recently dead organism in grams or kilograms. 
  • Organisms can gain energy from consuming biomass and turn this energy into their body tissue (their own biomass).
  • Dead organisms are first dried in an oven before biomass is recorded as different organisms contain different amounts of water.
  • Pyramids of biomass can be constructed to represent the relative amount of biomass in each level of a food chain.
  • Trophic level 1 is at the bottom of the pyramid.
