  • Active transport is the movement of substances from a more dilute solution to a more concentrated solution.
  • As this movement is against a concentration gradient, it requires energy from respiration.
  • Active transport facilitates:
    • The absorption of mineral ions from very dilute solutions in the soil into plant root hairs. Plants require ions for healthy growth.
    • The absorption of sugar molecules from lower concentrations in the gut into the blood, which has a higher sugar concentration. Sugar molecules are needed for cell respiration.
