Resource cycles and environmental change

  • The water cycle is important so that living organisms can continually be supplied with water, which is the major component of all cells and is thus necessary for life.
  • The water cycle provides fresh water for plants and animals on land before draining into the seas.
  • Water is continuously evaporated and precipitated (as rain, snow, hail or sleet).
  • Runoff is the movement of water across the surface.
  • Infiltration is the movement of water into the ground to become groundwater.
  • Subsurface flow is the movement of groundwater to the ocean.
