  • Equations show the relationship between scientific variables under certain conditions. To use an equation to find an unknown value using an equation:
    • Rearrange equation algebraically to make the unknown variable the subject.
    • Substitute in the values in the correct places, ensuring the units are the ones needed for the equation, and calculate the unknown value.
  • Formula triangles can be used to help understand how to rearrange equations.
    • Cover the part of the triangle for the unknown value.
    • Divide the top value by the bottom value, or multiply the bottom values.
