  • Root hair cells are adapted for the efficient uptake of water by osmosis and mineral ions by active transport:
    • Thin: short distance for osmosis and active transport
    • Long: penetrate between soil particles to come into contact with water and mineral ions
    • Large surface area: maximise osmosis and active transport
    • Lots of mitochondria for active transport
