Resource cycles and environmental change

  • The efficiency of food production can be improved by restricting energy transfer from food animals to the environment.
  • This can be done through intensive farming to maximise yields by reducing energy use and biomass loss:
    • Limiting movement by having animals packed together in small pens.
    • Controlling the temperature of their surroundings.
    • Some people have ethical objections to some intensive farming methods, for example restricting movement may affect an animal’s quality of life.
  • Some animals are fed high-protein foods to increase growth.
  • Crop rotation can be done, which may provide less encouragement for pests and be less damaging to soil.
